GENEVA: The auto industry will put ecology and economy on display when the Geneva Motor Show opens to the public on Thursday, to try to reverse plunging sales.

The first European rendezvous of the year from March 5 to 15 is still expected to attract 700,000 visitors, according to the organisers.

Some 120 new or modified models are due to be presented in the western Swiss city as car companies from around the world woo reluctant buyers.

Sales continued to fall in 2009, with new car registrations dropping by 27 percent in Europe last month to 958,000 vehicles, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association.

Sales plunged by 18 percent in the United States in 2008, and by 37 percent last month according to some studies.

Hyundai is showing a Tucson SUV with a fuel cell in place of a traditional gasoline engine for the Los Angeles auto show. If the Tucson looks familiar, you may have seen it on the street. Hyundai recently took part in the Hydrogen Road Tour, which was a 13-day drive across the country to demonstrate the feasibility of hydrogen-powered vehicles in real world driving conditions.

There aren't many specifics available right now, but we're betting the Hyundai uses a system similar to that found in the Kia Borrego FCEV, which is also debuting at the Los Angeles show. Hyundai did tell us the Tucson could go 185 miles before refueling and allegedly hit speeds of 95 mph on the Hydrogen Road Tour.

Volkswagen's newest Hymotion is a hydrogen fuel-cell Tiguan

Volkswagen showed off its fourth generation fuel-cell research vehicle, based around Volkswagen's new Tiguan mini-4WD. Hydrogen is used to create electricity, which powers the car's electric drive motor. There's also a lithium-ion battery pack for extra electricity storage.

The previous two generations of Volkswagen's HyMotion fuel-cell research vehicles were built on its Touran minivan platform. Volkswagen has just introduced the Tiguan crossover vehicle and, so, chose to use this model to showcase its latest fuel-cell technology.

The Mazda CX-7 is one of the latest additions to the growing list of “soft-roaders” that are becoming increasingly popular with everyone from the school-run set to those wanting to add a modicum of machismo to their motoring image.

From a styling perspective, the CX-7 doesn’t instantly tick the machismo box, but it is distinctive and handsome… The Mazda’s sleek, curved lines will appeal to those torn between the draw of a sports car and an SUV. The steeply curved windscreen angle gives the Mazda CX-7 a dynamic silhouette, while the rising belt line and prominent fender arches hint at the RX-8 influence. But it’s the rear of this car that is most impressive. The large dual exhaust pipe and detailed round motif tail lamps round off this vehicle’s its sporty appearance.

Don’t be mistaken by the Mazda CX-7’s compact lines, however. Once inside, you feel as if you are sitting in any one of the larger SUV’s on the road. And as you drive past other vehicles in this class you feel as if you are in the league of the big boys! This car certainly ‘represents the adventurous spirit of Mazda’, as the company says. It is luxurious and entertaining to drive.

At the heart of the CX-7 lies a detuned version of the turbocharged and intercooled 2,3-litre four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine that has seen service in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 MPS. This unit is mated with a six-speed Activematic transmission, which allows the fun and freedom of manually shifting gears for the racecar driver in you. The engine develops 175 kW at 5 000r/min and 350 Nm torque at 2 500r/min. To put this power into play, the Mazda CX-7 is equipped with Mazda’s newly developed Active Torque-Split All-Wheel Drive system. And with a top speed of 181 km/h and 13 second sprint from zero to 100 km/h, this is not just a family car, it’s a fun car!

In keeping with the CX-7’s sporty appearance, the car’s handling inspires a great deal of confidence, thanks to sharp steering and minimal body-roll. The acronymic assault of driver aids such as ABS, EBD, TCS and DSC, help to make the most of the power on offer and lend to the feeling that you are driving a sports car and not an SUV. The only negative that could be drawn against the CX-7’s nimble handling is that the taut suspension can make itself apparent on less than perfect road surfaces

The cabin is spacious and the enveloping sports seats are comfortable and offer a commanding perch, while the “double-roof structure” sunroof adds to the light, airy feel of the cabin. There is hardly of hint of “Soccer Mom” about the CX-7 - to be honest, not once did I feel like a middle-aged woman driving this car. In fact, I wouldn’t mind having one of these at my age (25)…the sporty driving dynamics would prove to be a boon on long road trips and there’s enough practical storage space for a surf trip with the guys.

The orange dials aren’t all that appealing, but somehow fit with the look and feel of the car. And one of the best features is the six-disk CD changer that delivers crisp sound through 240-watt Bose 9-speaker Surround System. There are satellite controls for this system mounted on the steering wheel alongside the cruise control settings.

Normally, when a manufacturer claims to have combined the virtues of a sports car and an SUV, you tend to take such a statement with a pinch of salt. The CX-7, however, appears to have successfully bridged the gap between two distant genres of motoring, being fun to drive and practical – I’d be loathe to extol its virtues off-road, but the ride height should allow you to tackle the odd dirt track without too much drama. It gets many looks along the road and you do feel pretty important in this vehicle. Get this in black and I can guarantee you will have no problem making friends!

Nissan Unveils Their NV2500 Light Commercial Vehicle Concept

Despite the overall gloomy worldwide economy and major automotive industry layoffs, some manufacturers still work hard building next generation vehicles, like Nissan and their new commercial van, the NV2500.

At the latest Tokyo Motor Show back in 2007, Nissan unveiled the NV200, their first attempt at designing a commercial van. Today Nissan went further by announcing their NV2500 concept that will see the light on the North American market in 2010.

Based on Titan F-Alpha chassis, the NV2500 concept is just one of many configurations possible, with a new and improved diesel engine and automatic transmission.

World’s cheapest car- Tata Nano to hit Indian roads in July

Ratan Tata on Monday launched the Nano in Mumbai’s famed Parsi Gymkhana. Nano is the cheapest car in the World, with an on-the-road price tag of Rs 1.2 to 1.3L. The bookings for the car will be open from April 9 to April 25. Tata Motors would insist on 100% (Rs 1 lakh) down payment for the Nano on booking.

The Nano will be sold through a lottery system. The booking forms would be available over the week with all its dealers, select SBI branches and all Tata group retail ventures, including Croma, Westside, Trent and Star Bazaar. The booking forms will cost Rs 300 only. Dream car Nano comes with a warranty of 18 months or 24,000 kms.

Chrysler Shocks Electric Car Timeline With New Plug-ins for 2010

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - In a surprise move here this morning amid struggling sales numbers from its dealers and fuel-efficient buzz from competitors, Chrysler announced that it’s charging into the electric vehicle market a lot sooner than expected. The automaker just unveiled a trio of battery-powered vehicles-including an all-electric, 200-mile-range Dodge sports car that we revved up near its 120-mph top speed on the test track and think could give the Tesla Roadster a run for its money-and plans to bring one of them to market by 2010, aligning Chrysler with the timetable for General Motors’ Chevy Volt.

Chrysler officials, who reinforced their case for an entirely hybrid fleet at least partially powered by batteries, said at a news conference on Tuesday that they’re aiming to sell all three cars-extended-range plug-in versions of a Jeep Wrangler and Chrysler Town & Country were unveiled in addition to the Dodge EV-within a decade. 2009 Nissan Murano earns IIHS Top Safety Pick rating

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has just finished the latest round of their long running series of crash tests of new vehicles. This time around they evaluated nine different mid-sized SUVs and CUVs. IIHS does front, rear and side impact testing on each of the vehicles and in the latest batch of tests, only one vehicle got the Top Safety Pick award. The second generation Nissan Murano scored the coveted award for getting good ratings in all crash tests as well as having electronic stability control. While IIHS points out that overall safety is improving on this class of vehicles, some of them still aren't performing as well as they could. The Jeep Liberty and Wrangler Unlimited only managed a marginal grade on the side impact test, while the Kia Sorento was rated poor on the same test. Mazda's CX-9 and CX-7 got marginal rear crash results, while the Mitsubishi Endeavor did poorly when hit from behind. The only vehicle in the test to miss out on a good rating for the frontal offset test was the HUMMER H3 which was only acceptable. Check out all the ratings at the IIHS site.

Another step towards GM's lithium BAS hybrids

By the second half of 2010 GM should begin rolling out a few new hybrids with its upgraded BAS mild hybrid system. And the lithium-ion batteries for these new hybrids will be powered by Hitachi.

Today, Hitachi announced that it is planning to significantly increase production of its lithium ion batteries in advance of an expected significant increase in demand. So far, GM alone has already ordered enough cells for 100,000 hybrid vehicles.

Vehicles affected: 25,517

On certain vehicles, one or both of the side curtain airbags may have been incorrectly positioned during vehicle assembly. If this occurred, a portion of the bag may be restricted from fully deploying. The side curtain airbag will still timely deploy, meet and exceed applicable safety standards. This action is deemed a voluntary service campaign and is not being conducted under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, reposition the airbag.

Most motors I test are subject to their scrutiny – especially during the football season when they are ferried to and from training sessions and matches in the latest automobiles.

They are not easily impressed, so when they remarked on the smoothness of the ride in the Subaru Impreza I took notice.

This was because the 1.5R had done anything but impress me up to that point.

The Impreza rightly has a reputation for hair-raising heroics, but Subaru decided the range needed a more conservative version. The reasoning is that, while Mach 2 with your hair on fire may be okay for Tom Cruise in Top Gun, for some, 0-60mph in less time than it takes to say Scooby Doo is scary.

So for them Subaru decided to offer a ‘lite’ version of its legendary motor.

But it may have gone a bit too far in toning down the performance because the 1.5R has about as much punch as a butterfly.

Vincero is also the name of the latest automobile accessory line by refining specialist Mansory. Mansory already finds many parallels for the new name: The plot of the aria stems from a Persian tale of 1001 days which also relates to the standard motorisation of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 with 1,001 hp.
On the other hand, it should also refer to the origin of Kourosh Mansory, the founder and CEO of Mansory Corporation. And the opera has another reference to the offered product portfolio by ending after three acts. The Mansory Bugatti Veyron Linea Vincero edition is also not infinite – the project is strictly limited.

It goes without saying that such a sonorous name is only suitable for an absolutely high-quality programme. Already the Bugatti Veyron serial edition sets standards in terms of price, maximum speed and engine power and leaves its competitors far behind when a contender for the super sports car is to be crowned. Whoever now thinks that everything possible has been achieved, can be proved wrong. Already visually, the changes clearly show. car design. Mansory manufactures nearly all auto body parts from ultra-light and high-strength carbon. The applied hardening technique with strong pressure and high temperatures in the autoclave thereby enormously improve the material quality.

In order to perfect the entire visual appearance, Mansory devised new, striking fully-forged turbine-design wheels for the Mansory Bugatti Veyron Linea Vincero in serial dimensions. .

2009 Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss

Recently, the nearly eighty-year-old Moss returned to Brescia, Italy, the site of his great racing triumph, to sample the last-of-the-line SLR. Asked to give his opinion of the new supercar that bears his signature, Sir Stirling was extremely candid: "I'm afraid modern cars don't do much for me," he said. "I have seen the SLR once before, but I never tried one. Quite frankly, I am not that interested, either. You see, I don't like driving on the road anymore. Too much traffic, too many people who don't know what they are doing. That's why the only car I own is the vintage OSCA that I still race occasionally. When a transportation need arises, I call a taxi or ask [my wife] Susie to chauffeur me in herSmart."

But Moss seemed to warm up to the 2009 SLR. "It is brash and very aggressive," he allowed. "You certainly don't notice any lack of power or torque," he conceded after his test drive. "I suppose one needs all those horses to compensate for the weight penalty, which is a typical vice of modern cars. It certainly also feels very safe - strong roadholding, sticky tires, good chassis, awesome brakes. But it is loaded with electronics, and some engineering details look quite complex, so I am curious what the reliability is like in everyday use."

Moss needn't worry. The 641-hp, 200-plus-mph hyperexotic SLR isn't likely to see much everyday use. It has only a token windshield, no top, and a sticker price of €750,000 (a little more than $1 million). All seventy-five examples - which were made available only to current SLR owners - have been snapped up, presumably by serious collectors.

(Over) Active Aero: VW recalling Touareg over spoilers that might take flight

With products like its now-defunct Corrado sports coupe, Volkswagen has proven that they understand the benefits of active aerodynamics – but a new recall in conjunction with the National HIghway Traffic Safety Administration centers on the potential for some completely unintentional and undesired active aero with the company's products. According to NHTSA, VW will recall 14,416 2007-2009 Touareg SUVs because the vehicle's roof spoiler can jettison itself from the vehicle, potentially striking pedestrians or other vehicles. Apparently, the problem stems from the fastening struts on the spoiler which can crack, leading to the loosening or outright detachment of the aerodynamic element. Owners of Touaregs covered under the recall can bring their vehicles to their local dealer, which will install reinforcement wedges to the assembly for free. Green-minded fans of the upcoming SLS supercar that Mercedes-Benz AMG has been working on for well over two years, rejoice. The rumormill is buzzing with word that an all-electric version of the gullwinged monster could enter limited production in 2015. That's a ways off, but considering the gestation period of the gas-chugging version, it's pretty much par for the course. According to the gossip-happy blokes over at Autocar, the electric SLS will share its lightweight aluminum body, gullwing doors, and most of the interior with upcoming SLS.
